A sphygmomanometer is a medical device used to measure blood pressure. It typically consists of an inflatable cuff that is wrapped around the upper arm, a pump to inflate the cuff, and a pressure gauge to measure the pressure in the cuff.
To use a sphygmomanometer, the cuff is placed around the upper arm and inflated to a pressure higher than the systolic blood pressure. The pressure is then slowly released while listening for the sounds of blood flow in the artery, known as Korotkoff sounds. The systolic pressure is the pressure at which the first sound is heard, and the diastolic pressure is the pressure at which the sound disappears.
